Choosing Hawaii family photo outfits is so much easier once you have a color palette in mind. The next step is finding pieces that bring everything together while still feeling natural, timeless, and true to your family.
If you haven’t chosen your colors yet, start with my guide: What to Wear for Family Photos in Hawaii.
Before buying anything new, shop your own closets. You may already have a great neutral dress, linen shirt, pair of chinos, or textured sweater that works perfectly. Lay everything out together and see what you already have before filling in the missing pieces.
If you do need to shop, these are some of my favorite places to find timeless, photo-friendly clothing for the whole family.
When shopping, keep the overall look in mind: soft colors, natural textures, subtle patterns, and clothing with movement. You don’t need everyone to wear the same color—just choose pieces that feel like they belong together
For Mom, I recommend choosing her outfit first and building the rest of the family’s wardrobe around it.
Look for pieces with movement and texture—especially flowing dresses, midi or maxi lengths, soft sleeves, linen, cotton, gauze, and romantic silhouettes.

For Hawaiʻi sessions, I especially love dresses that move in the breeze. They add softness and dimension to your photographs and work beautifully against the ocean, mountains, and tropical landscape.

Dad’s outfit should complement Mom’s without feeling too formal or overly matched. Simple, well-fitting pieces photograph best.
Think linen shirts, Henleys, button-downs, chinos, neutral pants, and understated sweaters.

Crew neck sweater
Neutral button-up
Textured shirt
For beach sessions, rolled sleeves, linen fabrics, and relaxed button-down shirts photograph beautifully while still feeling comfortable.
I recommend avoiding large logos, athletic shirts, cargo shorts, and bright sneakers whenever possible.

For boys, keep things comfortable and simple.
Layers and textures photograph beautifully, but your child should still be able to run, climb, play, and cuddle without feeling restricted.

Soft neutrals, muted blues, olive, camel, tan, rust, and warm brown are all beautiful options for boys.

Girls’ clothing is a wonderful place to add a little texture, movement, or a subtle pattern to the family’s wardrobe.
Flowing dresses, soft skirts, knit sweaters, and delicate details photograph beautifully without feeling overly formal.

If one child is wearing a pattern, try to pull one or two of those colors into the rest of the family’s outfits rather than adding several competing prints.

You certainly don’t need to shop exclusively from this list. Some of the prettiest Hawaii family photo outfits come from mixing pieces from several different places.
A few more stores worth browsing include:
H&M — great for affordable neutral basics
Free People — beautiful flowing dresses and textured pieces
Joyfolie — boutique women’s and girls’ clothing with frequent sales
Anthropologie — elevated dresses, skirts, and accessories
Abercrombie — great neutral dresses, men’s shirts, and tailored basics
Poshmark — pre-owned name-brand and designer clothing at a fraction of retail prices.
For last-minute wardrobe needs, Amazon can be incredibly helpful.
Instead of searching something broad like “family photo outfit,” search for the specific style and color you need.
For example:
Women’s linen maxi dress
Women’s cream flowy midi dress
Men’s oatmeal linen button-down
Boys olive Henley shirt
Girls dusty rose maxi dress
The more specific you are, the easier it is to find pieces that fit your family’s palette.
Just remember to order early enough to try everything on together. Colors can look very different online than they do in person.
Once you’ve chosen everyone’s outfits, lay them all together on a bed or floor.
You should see a mixture of colors and textures that feel connected without looking identical.
Take a quick phone photo.
If one piece immediately grabs your attention because it’s extremely bright, heavily patterned, or dramatically different from everything else, it will probably do the same thing in your family photographs.
You can also send me a photo of your outfits before your session if you’d like help making the final selections.
The goal isn’t to make your family look like someone else.
Start with pieces you already love. Add one or two new items where needed, and focus on creating an overall look that feels natural, comfortable, and connected.
The best Hawaii family photo outfits feel coordinated without looking overly styled or matching. When everyone is comfortable and the colors complement the landscape, the photographs feel much more natural and timeless.
The clothing simply helps bring everything together.
I love helping families create beautiful, timeless outfits that complement Hawaiʻi’s incredible scenery. If you’re planning family photos on Oʻahu and would like help choosing your location, color palette, and wardrobe, I’d love to photograph your family.
